In three Hiiumaa Coop stores, paper price labels have been partially replaced with electronic shelf labels. The goal was to make daily operations smoother and to use employees’ time more efficiently.
Why Was the Change Necessary?
In retail, prices change constantly. Promotions, supplier price fluctuations, and seasonality mean that pricing is a daily task. In Hiiumaa stores, where teams are smaller, managing paper price labels was time-consuming and exhausting. Every price change required printing, cutting, and walking through the store aisles, and there was always a risk of errors.
Kaja Antons, Managing Director of Hiiumaa Consumer Cooperative, noted that time consumption was the key factor that prompted them to look for an alternative solution.
“The main concern was the cost of the solution, but we hope that digitalisation will allow us to use our workforce more efficiently.”
How Does the System Work?
The solution chosen was Vusion electronic shelf labels. The labels are connected to the store’s central system, meaning that whenever a price changes, the new price is automatically updated on the shelf labels. Employees no longer need to manually replace labels, and the risk of human error is significantly reduced.
E-ink technology ensures excellent readability in all lighting conditions and a long battery life. In addition to prices, the labels can display promotions, product information, or QR codes.

What Can Other Retailers Learn from This?
Hiiumaa Coop’s experience shows that electronic shelf labels are not only for large retail chains. In smaller stores, where every working hour counts, the impact can be even greater. It makes sense to start with departments where prices change frequently and then expand step by step.
The return on investment is also significantly better today than it was a few years ago. Technology has evolved, prices have decreased, and labour costs have increased.
